Aau Ekpoma and exorbitant fees

I hereby make this special and passionate appeal to well-meaning Nigerians and all lovers of education to prevail on the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, to immediately rescind the sharp and exorbitant increase in fees now payable in Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma for the current session.

AAU is a state government-owned tertiary institution and is not among the elitist private universities whose unbridled roof-top fees can be explained away.

Edo people are predominantly peasants and civil servants, whose salary payment of late has been nothing but regular.  I wonder how many parents and guardians in the state and indeed other parts of Nigeria can conveniently send their children and wards to the school under this present fees regime. For the new intakes and 100-200 level-returning students, about N250,000 to N300,000 is needed as school fees, acceptance fees and sundry charges.

Tell me, how many parents and guardians can afford these fees under this suffocating and unbearable recession?  No wonder many parents and guardians are presently withdrawing their children and wards from the university and parents of the newly admitted students are regretfully aghast.

Throughout last week, the media was inundated with the news of sporadic students’ unrest and demonstration in the school over the prohibitive fees.

Haba, Governor Oshiomhole! Even the state government new Edo University in Oshiomhole’s hometown of Iyanmo, is not better.  The school fees in the school range from N500,000 to N1,000,000.

This is a completely unacceptable parting gift and unmitigated let-down of the trust given to the governor by the good people of Edo State, especially now that he is busy winding down.
