Police quiz PDP factional leaders over alleged arson

Success Nwogu, Ilorin
No fewer than 10 leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to the factional chairman of the party in the state, Mr. Sunday Fagbemi, have been quizzed by the Police over arson allegation.
Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that Kwara State Police Command had invited some members of the faction, including Fagbemi, his secretary, Mr. Isiaka Alao; the women leader, Fatimoh Magaji; a former state lawmaker, Illiasu Ibrahim; and another prominent leader of the party in Kwara State, Shuru Atanda.
Some of the members of Fagbemi’s faction had, on Monday, unlocked and gained entrance into the PDP state secretariat along Asa Dam Road in Ilorin, the state capital, which had been locked for many months.
Sources said another factional chairman of the party in the state, Iyiola Oyedepo, and other leaders of his faction were attending the National Executive Council meeting of PDP in Abuja when the Fagbemi faction took over the secretariat.
It was gathered that Oyedepo petitioned the Police over the development at the state party secretariat.
Oyedepo’s factional state Publicity Secretary, Rex Olawoye, said the action of the Fagbemi faction was surprising.
He expressed surprise that Fagbemi, who he said was part of the party’s election last April, could be claiming being the state chairman of the party.
Olawoye said, “If Fagbemi was the chairman of the part in Kwara State, why was he not in Abuja for the NEC meeting in that capacity?”
Fagbemi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, confirmed that they were invited by the Police.
He said that after their explanation, they were allowed to go; adding that the Police would later invite the two factions for amicable resolution of the issue.
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, in an interview with our correspondent confirmed that the Police invited Fagbemi’s factional leaders and members following a petition from Oyedepo’s faction.
According to him, the petitioners accused Fagbemi’s factional leaders and members of destroying things at the party secretariat and forcibly taking possession of the office.
He added that the Fagbemi factional leaders and members were allowed
to go after interrogation.
Okasanmi said the Police had continued investigation into the matter.
