The incumbent Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Mr. Ahmed Saleh, and his Court of Appeal counterpart, Mr. Aliyu Ibrahim, are in the race to take over from the outgoing Secretary of the National Judicial Council, Mr. Danladi Halilu.
Our correspondent confirmed from a credible source on Wednesday that the NJC will pick one of the two candidates to succeed Danladi, during its ongoing meeting, which is likely to be the last under the chairmanship of the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed.
Justice Mohammed will retire when he clocks the mandatory retirement age of 70 on November 10.
On his part, the outgoing NJC secretary,Halilu, will leave office on attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65 on November 16.
It was learnt that Saleh and Ibrahim emerged as the preferred candidates from the interview conducted two weeks ago by the Federal Judicial Service Commission.
There were 16 applicants who participated in the interview.
The 16 applicants that attended the interview included Chief Registrars of all the federal courts and some of their deputies and Chief Magistrates.
The ongoing meeting of the NJC is to hold between Wednesday and Thursday.
The source confirmed to our correspondent that the council would also consider about seven petitions it received against some judges that had already been concluded.
Also on the agenda of the NJC’s meeting, according to the source, is the consideration of the appointments of some judges for the National Industrial Court bench.
It was learnt that the candidates for the National Industrial Court bench had earlier been interviewed by the Federal Judicial Service Commission which recommended their appointments.
The NJC is also said to be set to review the cases of the recently arrested judges and bid the outgoing CJN a farewell.
