Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formed a new alliance with over 30 other parties called the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). The coalition emerged on Monday when the opposition parties met at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Their collective aim is to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before the name of the coalition was announced, the leaders of the merging parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Part of the agreement is to mobilise support for consensus candidates at the centre, states, and the Legislative arm of government.
Heads of parties in attendance included that of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP), National Conscience Party (NCP), and Labour Party.
Also at the meeting were PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, immediate past Senate President, David Mark, and chairman of the recently formed ”Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC)” Buba Galadima.
