Breaking: INEC postpones 2019 presidential election, issues new date for election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the general elections.
The presidential election will now take place on Saturday 23rd of February 2019 while Senatorial & Governorship elections will take place on Saturday 9th of March 2019.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced this at a press briefing on Saturday morning held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The press briefing followed a crucial meeting of the INEC boss with top officials of the commission which started late on Friday night.

The very important meeting had in attendance all 12 national commissioners of INEC.

The polls were shifted despite earlier assurance by the INEC boss that the commission has no plan to postpone the elections.

Professor Yakubu’s announcement has put an end to speculations that the electoral umpire would shift the polls after encountering challenges in the distribution of electoral materials.
